COUNTDOWN TO DOWNTOWN
July Groundbreaking of Convention Center Hotel to be Public Celebration to Salute Volunteers Who Aided Recovery from Tropical Storm Allison
HOUSTON, TX (JULY 9) Houstonians can celebrate the groundbreaking for the Hilton Americas Hotel and the expansion of the George R. Brown Convention Center on Saturday, July 28 with a free public concert and fireworks.
Mayor Brown has also dedicated the celebration as a salute to Houston's spirit and the volunteers who have aided in the city's recovery from Tropical Storm Allison.
Wynonna will headline the Countdown to Downtown Music Festival with special guests, La Mafia - both presented by El Paso Corporation.
The entertainment gets underway at 6:00 P.M., with gates and concessions opening at 5:00 P.M. in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center, with the downtown skyline serving as the backdrop for the groundbreaking and fireworks finale.
La Mafia will take the stage at 7:15 p.m. and Wynonna will perform at 8:35 p.m. (times are subject to change).
The fireworks finale, choreographed to music, will be launched by a unique groundbreaking ceremony with Houston business and civic leaders kicking off the aerial display from the main stage.
More musical entertainment will follow the fireworks, concluding the evening at 11:00 P.M.
